Armenian parliament speaker dismisses opposition calls for resignation

18 June 2024 09:58

Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan has rebuffed demands from the opposition for the government's resignation, asserting strong public support for Prime Minister and his cabinet.

Speaking to reporters, Simonyan criticized the opposition for what he described as unchanged rhetoric and personnel, save for a leadership switch from Vazgen Manukyan to Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.

"The opposition remains unchanged in essence - same faces, same narratives, same demands," remarked Simonyan, underscoring his view that the ruling Civil Contract faction need not prioritize discussions on the opposition's draft message.

He questioned the necessity of ensuring quorum at parliamentary sessions for such debates, suggesting it was not aligned with public trust in the current government.

Simonyan emphasized that both the Prime Minister and his cabinet enjoy significant trust and support from the Armenian populace, dismissing calls to engage in what he termed as "formal issues." He expressed the Parliament's reluctance to entertain what he referred to as the "false agenda" of the opposition, aiming to avoid wasting legislative time.
