Armenian speaker slams RT chief in fiery post, citing threats to national sovereignty
Speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly Alen Simonyan has issued a scathing personal attack against Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of RT and the Russia Today media group, accusing her of meddling in Armenia’s internal affairs and spreading disinformation.
In a post on his Telegram channel, Simonyan described the Russian journalist as "yet another vile creature from the freak show currently operating in Russia," accusing her of exploiting her Armenian heritage to interfere in Armenian politics, Caliber.Az reports.
“She keeps inserting herself into our country’s sovereign affairs, appealing to her Armenian roots while having absolutely nothing in common with Armenia or the Armenian people — apart from a surname ending in ‘-yan’,” he wrote.
Simonyan alleged that the Russian media figure repeatedly insults Armenia’s leadership and incites unrest.
“She regularly pops up in the media space, insults our leadership, calls for protests in our country, urges people to overthrow the government, and spreads lies while simultaneously threatening the nation and its people,” he said.
Referring to one of her recent claims, he added: “Here she is again, peddling another lie — citing fictitious authors from an unknown newspaper about a non-existent document.”
The Armenian parliamentary speaker mocked what he described as a coordinated disinformation campaign: “It feels like the freak show has launched an Olympics under the slogan: ‘More deceitful. More vile. More base.’ And Simonyan is competing for yet another gold medal.”
He framed the attacks as part of a broader effort to destabilise Armenia ahead of its upcoming elections.
“This is just another manifestation of the hybrid war being waged against our country,” he said. “As elections near, the barking in our direction will only grow louder by the day — until, finally, that barking mouth will whimper and shut for good.”
