ASTRA: Kuibyshev oil refinery catches fire in Russia’s Samara following attack PHOTO / VIDEO

The Kuibyshev Oil Refinery in Samara, Russia, caught fire following an attack, according to an open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysis by ASTRA.

Residents of the Samara Region reported explosions overnight on September 22.

According to ASTRA’s analysis of footage recorded by eyewitnesses, the Kuibyshev Oil Refinery was targeted and is now burning. It is one of the largest oil industry facilities in the region and is part of Russian oil giant Rosneft.

The refinery has been targeted several times in the past. In August 2025, the Kuibyshev Oil Refinery suspended operations following a drone attack, according to ASTRA. Earlier, in March 2024, drones damaged one of the refinery’s units, also forcing a halt to its production cycle.

On June 10, 2026, the refinery once again suspended operations following another Ukrainian attack.

Earlier, on September 21, Ukraine’s General Staff announced that attacks over the previous week had taken more than 45% of Russia’s oil refining capacity offline. The reported impact on Russia’s energy sector comes as US President Donald Trump said he believes Russia “has unfortunately lost control of its Diesel Oil Industry due to its War with Ukraine.”
