Azerbaijan's Aghdam road construction advances, 70% of phase one finished

29 October 2024 11:06

The State Agency of Azerbaijan Automobile Roads has commenced the first phase of internal road construction in Aghdam, covering a 58.7 km section.

According to the agency's data, 70% of work on this section has already been completed, Caliber.Az reports.

As outlined in the city’s General Plan, Agdam’s total internal road network will span 189.7 km. Main roads within this network are projected to cover 17.5 km, with widths ranging between 55 and 60 metres and featuring six to eight lanes.

In addition, general-purpose city roads will stretch for 50 km, while local roads will extend for 122.2 km.

The foundation for Agdam’s internal road and communication network was laid on October 4, 2022, with the completion of construction targeted for 2026.

Moreover, the construction of Azerbaijan's Ahmadbeyli-Fuzuli-Shusha high-speed motorway is advancing swiftly as part of extensive road infrastructure improvements in Karabakh. This initiative aims to revitalise the socio-economic conditions of regions liberated during the 2020 Patriotic War. Launched on January 14, 2021, during President Ilham Aliyev's visit to Fuzuli, the motorway spans 81.6 kilometres and will enhance transport links between Ahmadbeyli, Fuzuli, and Shusha.

The highway is designed as a six-lane road (three lanes in each direction) with widths ranging from 37.7 to 29.5 metres, narrowing to four lanes (21.5 metres) in mountainous areas. Key features include seven tunnels, nine viaducts, and 30 subways.

The motorway connects with the M6 Hajigabul-Goradiz-Aghband-Zangezur corridor and traverses significant areas freed from Armenian control, such as Fuzuli, Khojavand, Khojaly, and Shusha. The project is slated for completion by the end of 2024.
