This year’s celebrations carry additional symbolism, as it is the sixth Novruz since Azerbaijan’s victory in the Patriotic War, reinforcing the holiday’s connection to national unity and renewal.
Rooted in centuries-old traditions, Novruz has long held a central place in the cultural and spiritual life of the Azerbaijani people, shaping values and customs passed down through generations. The праздник symbolises the awakening of nature, the start of a new year, and the first day of spring.
International recognition has further highlighted its importance. In 2009, Novruz was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, and in 2010, the United Nations declared March 21 as the International Day of Novruz.
Astronomical spring in Azerbaijan begins on March 20 at 18:46 local time this year.
In connection with both Novruz and the holy month of Ramadan, authorities have designated March 20–31 as non-working days across the country, extending the festive period for citizens.
