Belgium to contribute €140 million to Ukraine's air defence systems
Belgium will contribute €140 million to Ukraine's air defence against Russian attacks through the German Immediate Action on Air Defence (IAAD) initiative.
This was announced by Defence Minister Theo Francken during a parliamentary session on July 16, Caliber.Az reports, citing Belgian media outlet HLN.
The Belgian minister also talked about the possibility of Airbus A400M transport aircraft providing logistical support to Ukraine's forces.
According to the article, Francken is expected to meet with the German ambassador on July 17, with the publication noting that the contribution comes at the request of the German Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence.
The IAAD was launched in April 2024 by then-Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, with the aim of raising money and resources from the international community to rapidly acquire and deliver air defence systems to Ukraine. It further assists the countries that have chosen to donate air defence systems to Ukraine through joint funding.
