Berlin taps Kyiv envoy to lead German intelligence service
Germany’s Cabinet has officially appointed Martin Jäger, the country’s current ambassador to Ukraine, as the new president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND).
Jäger, 60, will succeed Bruno Kahl, who has led the BND since 2016. The decision was confirmed by government sources, Caliber.Az reports, citing German media.
A seasoned diplomat, Jäger brings a wealth of experience to the post, having served in a range of high-level roles, including assignments in crisis regions, within the Federal Chancellery, and in the economic sector. His appointment is viewed as a strategic move, particularly given the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe and the need for a steady hand in managing Germany’s foreign intelligence operations.
Bruno Kahl, 62, is expected to transition to a new role as Germany’s representative to the Holy See in Rome—a diplomatic posting he is reported to have pursued for some time.
The exact date for Jäger’s assumption of office has not yet been announced.
