Biden wants back in: Ex-president pledges to fundraise and campaign for Democrats
Former President Joe Biden is eager to re-enter the political fray, offering to raise funds, campaign, and assist Democrats in regaining ground lost as the Trump administration rolls back key party initiatives.
According to sources close to him, quoted by NBC News, Biden has privately assured Democratic leaders that he is ready to do whatever it takes to help the party recover from its recent setbacks, per Caliber.Az.
Last month, Biden met with newly elected Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Ken Martin to discuss ways he could contribute. With Democrats facing declining approval ratings and a struggle to find a compelling leader, Biden’s offer of support comes at a critical time. However, so far, his outreach has received a lukewarm response.
Despite his deep ties to the party, many Democratic activists and donors believe Biden is too closely associated with the 2024 defeat. At 82, he is seen by some as a figure of the party’s past rather than its future.
“Who’s going to want Joe Biden back in the game?” asked a major supporter, speaking anonymously to discuss the issue candidly.
Biden’s push to reengage with the party comes as a new NBC News poll reveals that the Democratic Party’s popularity has plummeted to a record low. Only 27% of registered voters now hold a favourable view of the party — the lowest level recorded since 1990.
When asked about Biden’s potential return to the political arena, President Donald Trump responded with a grin in the Oval Office on March 21, saying, “I hope so.”
Former First Lady Jill Biden is also stepping up to support Democratic candidates. As she and her husband settle back into life in Delaware, a source close to her says she is ready to campaign and raise funds.
“She recognizes that serving in the roles she held is an honour, and with that comes responsibilities to the party. She’s prepared to help in any way she can,” the source said.
Beyond their political efforts, both Bidens are carving out post-presidential lives. Each plans to write a book reflecting on their time in office. As Biden develops themes for his memoir, he has been consulting with former senior administration officials, including former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, national security adviser Jake Sullivan, and top White House advisers Mike Donilon and Steve Ricchetti.
