Blinken pushes for peace between Israel, Hamas before Biden's term ends

06 January 2025 13:52

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that officials in President Joe Biden's administration are striving to reach agreements on a ceasefire and the release of hostages between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement within the next two weeks.

During a press conference in Seoul, following talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin, Blinken expressed confidence that a ceasefire deal in Gaza could materialize, although it might not occur until after President Biden's term ends on January 20, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Blinken stated that the Biden administration would "work every minute of every day" until the final days of its term to secure an agreement on hostage releases.

"We very much want to bring this over the finish line in the next two weeks," Blinken said. "If we don't get it across the finish line in the next two weeks, I'm confident that it will get its completion at some point, hopefully sooner rather than later. When it does, it will be on the basis of the plan that President Biden put forward and that virtually the entire world supports."

The situation remains tense, with former President Donald Trump vowing stronger support for Israel and warning Hamas of "hell to pay" if it does not release the approximately 100 hostages still believed to be held in Gaza, more than a year after Hamas' October 7, 2023 terrorist attack. Israeli officials estimate that about two-thirds of the remaining hostages are still alive.

In a significant development, a Hamas official announced on Sunday that the group was prepared to release 34 hostages as part of the "first phase" of a potential deal with Israel. Indirect talks have reportedly resumed in Qatar, although Blinken emphasized that the deal was not yet final.

"We need Hamas to make the final necessary decisions to complete the agreement and to fundamentally change the circumstance for the hostages, getting them out, for people in Gaza, bringing them relief, and for the region as a whole, creating an opportunity to actually move forward to something better," Blinken said.

Blinken's efforts to secure a ceasefire have included 12 visits to the Middle East since Hamas' deadly attack on southern Israel on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of about 1,200 people and the kidnapping of 251 others. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a relentless military campaign in Gaza. Health officials in the Hamas-run Palestinian territory report that more than 45,000 people have been killed, and the region's infrastructure has been decimated, leaving nearly all residents displaced.
