Canada announces new sanctions on Russia amid Ukraine war
Canada has announced new sanctions targeting Russia in an effort to counter the country’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine.
The measures, which affect 31 individuals and paramilitary groups, were unveiled following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's participation in the Securing our Future Summit in London, Caliber.Az reports, citing the PM Office's press service.
In a statement, Trudeau’s office revealed that the sanctions will specifically target 10 individuals and 21 entities, including leaders of paramilitary organizations and related higher military officials. Among those targeted are nine leaders from post-Wagner paramilitary groups, as well as one member of Russia’s higher military leadership.
The sanctions extend to nine paramilitary organizations operating both in Ukraine and within Russia's African network. Additionally, 12 organizations linked to these groups are included in the new restrictions.
“Canada’s commitment to Ukraine is unwavering. We will continue to stand with Ukraine and work closely with our Allies to provide the necessary military, economic, and humanitarian support to push back against Russian aggression,” Prime Minister Trudeau remarked, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration.
This latest round of sanctions brings Canada’s total to over 3,000 individuals and entities affected by its measures against Russia’s destabilizing actions. The Canadian government has reiterated its dedication to increasing economic pressure on Russia and supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts.
“Together, we can ensure Ukraine is able to defend itself, rebuild, and secure a just and lasting peace,” Trudeau concluded, reaffirming Canada’s support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.
