Canada’s PM urges Gaza aid access in call with Israeli president

26 May 2026 09:55

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has spoken with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, raising concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and calling for an independent investigation into mistreatment of civilians on a Gaza-bound flotilla.

According to an official readout by the prime minister office, Carney said the “appalling treatment of civilians, including Canadian citizens” aboard the flotilla was unacceptable and urged accountability through an independent inquiry, Caliber.Az reports.

He also strongly condemned remarks made by Israel’s Minister of Public Security Itamar Ben‑Gvir, stressing that the protection of civilians and respect for human dignity must be upheld “everywhere, at all times.”

The Canadian prime minister reaffirmed Ottawa’s “unwavering support” for a negotiated two-state solution, describing it as an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living alongside Israel in peace and security.

During the call, Carney also reiterated Canada’s support for Israel’s security and its right to self-defence in accordance with international law, while emphasising the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities.

The leaders discussed wider regional tensions in the Middle East, with Carney urging de-escalation and a return to meaningful dialogue among all parties. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining stability in key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.

On Gaza, the Canadian leader described the humanitarian situation as “catastrophic” and called for the immediate and unimpeded delivery of aid to civilians. He also reiterated Canada’s opposition to Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank and condemned settler violence and attacks on Palestinian civilians.

The discussion also touched on Lebanon, where both sides welcomed efforts to advance dialogue amid continued instability. Carney expressed concern over civilian displacement and worsening humanitarian conditions in southern Lebanon, stressing the need for long-term regional stability.

The two leaders also addressed what was described as a global rise in antisemitism, with Carney outlining Canada’s measures to combat hate crimes and strengthen protections for Jewish communities through legislation and increased security funding.

Both sides agreed to remain in close contact as the conflict and regional tensions continue.
