Caspian Sea water level could drop by 18 meters Littoral states need urgent action to prevent problem
“The Caspian Sea is rapidly becoming shallow due to global climate change. Tens of kilometres of the once seabed under the scorching sun turned into a dried surface."
Report informs that the remarks came from the head of the Department of Geomorphology of the Coasts and the Bottom of the Caspian Sea of the Institute of Geography of Azerbaijan after Academician H. Aliyev, Doctor of Geography, Professor Amir Aliyev in an interview with the Russian TV channel "Russia 1" this week.
Aliyev said by the end of this century the Caspian Sea could become very shallow and the water level could drop by 9 or even 18 meters.
“This means that the reservoir will lose 34 per cent of the territory. This is a big problem for all countries with access to the sea, and Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Russia, and Turkmenistan will have to solve it together,” he added.
