CBS: Officials discuss possible Zelenskyy visit to US, sources say
US and Ukrainian officials are considering the possibility of bringing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the United States this week as part of President Donald Trump’s efforts to reach an agreement on Ukraine by Thanksgiving, sources told CBS News.
Officials cautioned that whether Zelenskyy’s trip takes place will depend on the outcome of peace negotiations held in Geneva on November 23. Trump has described the deadline as flexible, telling reporters on November 22 that the plan was “not my final” proposal.
Speaking from Geneva, Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted progress in discussions with European and Ukrainian officials, while emphasizing that further work remains.
He said, “I think this was a very, very meaningful – I would say probably best – meeting and day we've had so far in this entire process, going back to when we first came into office in January. But there's still some work left to do and that's what our teams are going to be doing right now.”
Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, also commented on the talks, stating, “We have very good progress and we are moving forward to the just and lasting peace.”
At present, no concrete plans have been made for a Zelenskyy visit, given ongoing diplomacy, and no meetings with Russian officials are scheduled, according to a senior White House official.
Another possible outcome of the Geneva negotiations could involve Army Secretary Dan Driscoll traveling to Russia or meeting Russian officials elsewhere, though Russian authorities told CBS News that nothing has been scheduled.
