COP29 president warns Strait of Hormuz tensions highlight global energy risks
The recent tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz have underscored the growing importance of global energy security, Azerbaijan's Presidential Representative on Climate Issues and COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev said on July 6.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 20th Baku Summer Energy School, organised by the Institute for Development and Diplomacy at ADA University, Babayev said the current geopolitical situation has reinforced the need to address energy-related challenges, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
"Now is a very appropriate time to discuss energy issues and the energy crisis," Babayev said.
"The events in the Strait of Hormuz once again demonstrated that the energy crisis is extremely relevant and poses a very serious threat to the entire world," he added.
Babayev also highlighted the growing role of nuclear power in the global energy transition, noting that international interest in the technology has increased.
"Within the framework of COP28 in Dubai, it was emphasised that nuclear energy is a safe source of energy, and interest in this field has now increased significantly worldwide," Babayev said.
