Czech Parliament convenes as Fiala government prepares to resign
The inaugural session of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Czech parliament, has concluded, with the resignation of the current government led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala expected in the coming days, Deník N reported.
The outgoing cabinet is scheduled to meet on the morning of November 6, with its resignation listed on the agenda. Czech media have indicated that the move could take place on the same day.
Under Czech law and political practice, the government’s resignation must be formally accepted by the president, who will instruct the prime minister and ministers to continue performing their duties until a new cabinet is appointed.
Parliamentary elections were held in the Czech Republic on October 3–4, with opposition movements ANO (“Action of Dissatisfied Citizens”), Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD), and Motorists winning the most seats.
On November 3, the three parties signed a coalition agreement, nominating ANO leader Andrej Babiš as their candidate for prime minister. On November 5, SPD chairman Tomio Okamura was elected Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies in the new session.
Babiš said he expects the incoming coalition government — which will command the support of 108 of the 200 MPs — to take office by mid-December.
