Death toll from Pakistani tutoring centre collapse rises to 14 children
The death toll from the collapse of a tutoring centre in the Pakistani city of Lahore has risen to 14 children, rescue services in Punjab Province said.
Emergency responders also recovered the body of a 30-year-old teacher from beneath the rubble. The children who died were between 5 and 16 years old, with most of the victims under the age of nine, Reuters reports.
According to preliminary findings, the tutoring centre was not officially registered and operated from a private residential building with a deteriorating roof.
Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his condolences and called for stronger safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“The loss of the precious lives of innocent children is extremely heartbreaking for the entire nation; effective safety measures are indispensable to prevent such tragedies,” the president said.
