Democrats signal renewed push to curb Trump’s war powers on Iran
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the US House of Representatives plans to revisit a war powers resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s authority to engage in military action against Iran once lawmakers return to session.
Jeffries said Democratic leadership intends to bring the measure back to the House floor after an earlier attempt fell short of the votes needed for passage, CNN reports.
“We brought a war powers resolution to the floor of the Congress that fell a few votes short when we were in session earlier this month. Upon our return, we’ll continue to do the same thing,” Jeffries said.
The proposed resolution seeks to reassert Congress’s constitutional role over war powers by restricting unilateral military action by the president in a potential conflict with Iran.
Jeffries also indicated that support within the Democratic caucus may have strengthened since the previous vote. According to the House minority leader, several Democrats who opposed the earlier measure have since signaled a change in position.
“Several of them have indicated that the next time we bring such a resolution to the floor, they will be prepared to support it,” Jeffries said.
Four House Democrats voted against the last resolution, contributing to its failure to pass. Democratic leaders now hope that shifting support within the caucus could help the measure succeed when it is brought forward again.
