Denmark, US seek “viable solution” on Greenland, says FM Frederiksen
Copenhagen and Washington are in talks and working to find a “viable solution” regarding Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said.
In an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza, she noted that a high-level working group has been established for this purpose.
“I am not seeking a conflict with the United States, but if someone threatens us, we will respond,” Frederiksen emphasized.
According to her, after US threats about taking control of Greenland, all European allies expressed support for Denmark and pledged to act similarly in such a situation. The prime minister said she hopes Americans will understand that the loyalty of Greenland’s population cannot be “bought” and that the islanders will determine their own future.
Frederiksen also stated that NATO has increased its activity in the Arctic, adding that a stronger allied presence in and around Greenland should put an end to the debate.
