Denmark votes in early election amid security tensions, economic pressures

24 March 2026 14:23

Voters across Denmark headed to the polls on March 24 in a closely watched general election, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen seeking a third term following a period marked by geopolitical tensions and domestic economic challenges.

More than 4.3 million citizens are eligible to vote for the 179-seat Folketing, Denmark’s parliament, which is elected for a four-year term. Frederiksen called the election in February, months ahead of schedule, apparently aiming to capitalize on her leadership during a standoff with US President Donald Trump over the future of Greenland, Associated Press reports.

Despite her strong international profile, Frederiksen has faced declining domestic support amid rising living costs. Economic concerns, pensions, and proposals for a potential wealth tax have dominated the campaign. Known for her backing of Ukraine and a strict stance on migration, the Social Democrat leader has recently proposed tighter asylum controls and stricter measures for foreign criminals.

Her main challengers include Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen of the Venstre party and opposition figure Alex Vanopslagh, who advocates tax cuts and reduced bureaucracy.

No party is expected to secure a majority, making coalition negotiations inevitable. The centrist Moderates, led by Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, could play a decisive role in forming the next government.

Although tensions over Greenland have eased, security concerns remain in focus. Frederiksen had earlier warned that a US takeover of the island could undermine NATO, though recent diplomatic engagement has reduced immediate tensions.

Voters expressed uncertainty about the future. “I would like some politicians who have a vision for our country,” said Peter Mortensen after casting his ballot. “What are we supposed to do in this world with war and our neighbors and perhaps our allies are threatening us instead of being allies? I don’t have the answers, but the politicians don’t have it either.”
