Deputy FM: Armenia to participate in BRICS summit in Russia

04 September 2024 15:02

Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Mnatsakan Safaryan has said that Armenia will be represented at the BRICS summit in Russia in October.

Safaryan made these remarks during a briefing, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

"Indeed, the Armenian side will participate," he stated in response to a journalist's question. The large-scale summit will take place in Kazan at the end of October.

Earlier, Russian officials had announced that leaders from the CIS countries would be invited. Additionally, leaders from several non-member states, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose participation has been confirmed, are also expected to attend.

BRICS is an acronym for a group of five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The organisation was initially known as BRIC before South Africa's inclusion in 2010. The BRICS group was originally formed as BRIC in 2009, with the aim of fostering cooperation among four major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, and China.

South Africa joined the group in 2010, expanding its membership and the acronym to BRICS. This expansion was aimed at representing a broader range of emerging markets and increasing the group's influence. BRICS aims to promote economic cooperation and development among its member countries, which are all significant players in the global economy.
