Nuclear deterrence only barrier to global war—Kremlin spokesperson
Nuclear deterrence remains the only effective mechanism preventing a global conflict amid the continued erosion of international security, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
Peskov emphasized that the principle of nuclear deterrence continues to serve as the foundation of global strategic stability, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“Nuclear deterrence is working. We in Russia understand this unequivocally, and at the present moment it is the cornerstone of international security,” he stated.
The Kremlin spokesman argued that the broader international security framework has weakened considerably in recent years.
“Global security has been significantly eroded in many respects. In fact, apart from nuclear deterrence, we have nothing left in the world. It is the only thing that protects the world from a global war,” Peskov said.
At the same time, he cautioned that nuclear deterrence is not capable of preventing regional conflicts, whose overall destructive potential continues to increase.
According to Peskov, the growing number of regional confrontations represents a significant challenge to international stability despite the continued role of nuclear deterrence in preventing a wider global conflict.
He also highlighted the likelihood that new categories of advanced weapons will emerge in the future. While these systems may not be nuclear, Peskov suggested they could possess a destructive capacity comparable to that of nuclear arms, potentially reshaping future security dynamics.
