Deputy PM: Russia, Azerbaijan maintain constructive economic ties

06 September 2025 10:00

Russia and Azerbaijan enjoy stable and constructive relations in the economic sphere, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk said in an interview with TASS on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

Overchuk noted that bilateral ties were functioning smoothly, recalling a recent intergovernmental commission meeting in Astrakhan where both sides stressed the absence of economic problems. He underlined that Moscow and Baku “understood each other well and were working effectively not only at the governmental level but also between enterprises and businesses,” Caliber.Az reports.

The deputy prime minister also addressed the issue of unblocking communications in the South Caucasus. He said Baku was seeking to restore a route that would ensure convenient transport links with Nakhchivan. According to him, reopening regional routes would also be in Armenia’s interest, given that the country’s borders with Azerbaijan and Türkiye remain closed.

Overchuk pointed out that Armenia’s only open access routes were through Iran and Georgia, the latter dependent on a single crossing point with Russia that is vulnerable to weather conditions. He emphasised that for Armenia, as a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, the development of reliable transport and logistics connections with neighbouring countries, including Russia, was crucial.
