Deputy PM: Russian economy makes bold pivot eastward
The Russian economy has undergone a significant realignment toward the East, with nearly 87% of trade now conducted with non-Western countries, a sharp increase from approximately 40% just five to six years ago.
The data was confirmed by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk in an interview with Russia 24, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“There is a clear shift in the Russian economy toward the East, toward the Global South, and toward emerging markets. Over the past five to six years, our economy has reoriented eastward. Today, roughly 87% of our trade in physical terms is with non-Western countries,” Overchuk said.
He noted that only five to six years ago, the share of trade with non-Western nations stood at around 40%.
“This demonstrates that our businesses have successfully adapted and reoriented. Our transport infrastructure, logistics, and financial systems have also been realigned. Today, we operate under entirely new conditions and feel confident, as we are engaging with partners who are genuinely willing to collaborate with us,” Overchuk added.
