Detainee count rises to 45 after storming of Georgian presidential administration
The number of people detained in connection with the storming of the Georgian presidential administration in Tbilisi has increased to 45, according to Georgian media reports cited by Caliber.Az.
The Interior Ministry confirmed the arrest of one additional individual, noting that the investigation is ongoing.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 4, when a major opposition rally outside the Orbeliani presidential residence escalated into clashes with police. The demonstration, initially promoted by organisers as a “peaceful revolution” and attended by tens of thousands, took an unexpected turn when some leaders urged participants to “seize state institutions.”
A small group of demonstrators breached the fence and attempted to enter the presidential palace grounds, prompting police to respond with water cannons and tear gas. The Health Ministry reported injuries on both sides during the confrontation.
The rally followed political tensions surrounding Georgia’s municipal elections. The opposition had previously announced a boycott, citing claims that the elections were predetermined and refusing to recognise the legitimacy of the ruling Georgian Dream party. However, the boycott was not unanimous: the Lelo party and For Georgia, led by former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, chose to participate.
Several opposition figures had called for a “peaceful change of power” on election day and encouraged supporters to gather on Rustaveli Avenue. Tens of thousands attended. When calls to storm the presidential palace were made from the stage, most of the crowd either dispersed or remained on Rustaveli Avenue, continuing their protest peacefully.
The Interior Ministry continues to investigate the events, and further detentions are possible as authorities review the incident.
