Discover Amsterdam’s charm

26 August 2024 08:03

Discover the best of Amsterdam with insights from former Formula 1 driver and current TV analyst Robert Doornbos.

Former Formula 1 and IndyCar driver Robert Doornbos has made Amsterdam his home since 2018, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

As an insider of the Dutch capital and a connoisseur of speed, Doornbos shares his top recommendations for making the most of a weekend in this vibrant city—whether you're an F1 fan or just seeking a unique local experience.

Robert Doornbos's passion for racing ignited at the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix when he was just 16 years old. Captivated by the thrill and precision of the sport, he dedicated himself to racing. By 2005, he was making headlines as Minardi's final race driver and later as Red Bull's test and reserve driver. Today, Doornbos channels his expertise as a TV analyst for various Dutch channels.   In this guide, he reveals his favorite spots and experiences in Amsterdam, offering an insider's perspective on how to enjoy the city like a local and a racing enthusiast. Boasting world-renowned museums, vibrant nightlife, and a distinctive cityscape interwoven with 165 canals, Amsterdam offers something for everyone. After a decade of racing around the globe in Formula Three, Formula 1, Sports Car, A1, and IndyCar Series, Rotterdam-born Robert Doornbos made Amsterdam his home in 2018.

Doornbos's connection to Amsterdam deepened when he witnessed the city's fervor for motorsports during the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix. Held at the Zandvoort track, located just over 40 kilometers west of Amsterdam and adjacent to the beach, the race weekend is a celebration of speed and spectacle. "You won't believe your eyes when you get to the beach at Zandvoort on race weekend," says Doornbos. "The Dutch are incredibly passionate about Formula 1. The atmosphere is electric! The promoters even won an award in 2023 for their outstanding entertainment."   The excitement around Formula 1 in the Netherlands surged with the rise of Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, who, despite being born in Belgium, has become a national hero. "Formula 1 exploded here, especially in 2021," Doornbos recalls. "I was working as a live analyst at the 2021 Abu Dhabi race for Ziggo Sport when Verstappen clinched his first title. We had six million viewers for the final race.

The celebration was so intense, I was awake for three days straight. When I finally got home, I couldn't even walk down the street—it was a nationwide phenomenon." Of course, Amsterdam offers much more than just the excitement of the Grand Prix. "It's an incredible place to live," says Doornbos. "The city is steeped in history, boasts fantastic bars and restaurants with innovative concepts, and provides countless opportunities to stay active."

Here are Doornbos' top recommendations for making the most of Amsterdam: Immerse Yourself in Amsterdam’s Charm: Cycling Through De 9 Straatjes   Amsterdam's compact size—just 165 square kilometers—makes it easy to navigate, especially on two wheels. With nearly 402 kilometers of bike paths, the city is a cyclist’s paradise, allowing you to effortlessly reach its main attractions.   "Grab a bike and explore the city," Doornbos advises. "Pedal along the canals, cross the bridges, and soak in the stunning architecture and charming houses." He particularly recommends cycling through De 9 Straatjes (Nine Streets), a historic neighborhood with nine intersecting lanes and four canals, as well as the vibrant Jordaan district. Both areas are brimming with bars, cafes, shops, and galleries, all set against flower-lined streets.   For a different perspective, Doornbos suggests taking a boat ride along Amsterdam’s canals, especially the scenic Prinsengracht, which winds through the city center, and the picturesque Brouwersgracht at the Jordaan’s northern edge. "It’s the perfect way for visitors to experience the city," he says. "From the Red Light District to the iconic coffee shops, you'll get a true sense of Amsterdam’s character, history, and lively atmosphere."

  1. Amsterdam’s passion for cycling even extends to its cultural institutions. At the Rijksmuseum, the Netherlands’ premier museum, you can literally cycle through history. The museum showcases 800 years of Dutch heritage, from the 1200s to the present.   "You can actually bike through our largest museum," Doornbos proudly points out. The cycle path takes you right through the heart of the Rijksmuseum, guiding you past majestic arches and expansive windows that frame views of its serene garden. Once you've parked your bike, you're free to explore the museum's impressive collection of over 8,000 works of art. The Rijksmuseum is home to masterpieces by iconic Dutch painters such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer. "If you appreciate art, you’ll find plenty of renowned Dutch artists here," says Doornbos. "And because it’s centrally located, you’re never far from a cozy bar, coffee shop, or restaurant."   Doornbos also suggests a visit to the Anne Frank House.

Although the museum dedicated to the young diarist and her family's hiding place often has "a long queue," he describes it as a "profoundly special" experience that offers deep insights into history.

For a touch of luxury and a chance to stay where celebrities and dignitaries choose to rest, Doornbos recommends the Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam. Established in 1890, this historic hotel is one of the oldest in the country and continues to be a premier destination for the well-heeled.

"This is where famous artists stay during their concerts," Doornbos notes. "Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have both stayed here while in town. It’s quite a famous spot." Located directly across from Amsterdam Central Station, this elegant 19th-century hotel offers 298 stylish, modern rooms and was designated a National Heritage Site in 2001.   According to Doornbos, September is the ideal time to visit Amsterdam. The weather remains pleasant, with temperatures around 20°C, making it perfect for cycling and exploring the city without the intense summer heat. "In September, you can fully appreciate why Amsterdam is so beautiful and enjoyable," he says.

For a truly immersive Amsterdam experience, Doornbos recommends staying in the sophisticated Oud Zuid (Old South) district. "It's the most charming and upscale area," he explains. "You’re still close to the city center and can easily stroll through the park to reach excellent restaurants." Developed in the 19th century, Oud Zuid is renowned for its boutique shops, galleries, and museums, including the Van Gogh Museum. Additionally, Vondelpark, Beatrixpark, and Sarphatipark are all within walking distance, offering plenty of green space and cultural attractions.
