Egypt says first phase of Gaza peace plan nearing completion
The first phase of the peace plan for Gaza is approaching its final stages, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has said.
“We are now in the concluding phase of implementing the first stage [of the Gaza plan],” Abdelatty told reporters at a briefing during a visit to New Delhi, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The second phase of the Gaza peace plan, which is currently under negotiation, focuses on reducing armed conflict and creating a secure environment. Central to this phase is the dismantling of Hamas's military capabilities. This includes the removal of offensive weaponry, such as tunnels and other military infrastructure, aimed at limiting the group’s ability to engage in further hostilities.
To support stability, an international force is expected to be deployed temporarily, drawing personnel from the United States, Arab countries, and Europe. This force would oversee security operations and assist in the training of a Palestinian police force to maintain local law and order.
Hamas is anticipated to relinquish its heavy weaponry, though it may retain lighter arms required for day-to-day control. This arrangement is intended to balance the objectives of security and governance while ensuring a sustainable framework for peace.
