Entire Gulf of Finland covered in ice amid cold snap
The Gulf of Finland has frozen completely, with ice now covering the entire waterway, according to Russian news agency Interfax.
Alexander Kolesov, head of the Hydrometeorological Centre of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, reported that several days of calm, frosty weather allowed the gulf to freeze entirely. “In the strait, two to three days ago, there was still young ice, which is thin and transparent,” he noted on his Telegram channel.
Kolesov also warned of a storm in the western part of the gulf, which is expected to break and compress the ice cover.
Meteorologists pointed out that the Gulf of Finland has not frozen so extensively since 2010 and 2011, making this winter freeze one of the most severe in recent years.
