Newly appointed Pakistani ambassador to Azerbaijan Qasim Mohiuddin has said that Pakistan's Prime Minister will pay a visit to Azerbaijan to attend COP29.
Azerbaijan and Pakistan also have strong cooperation within international organisations, he said, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
"Pakistan has always supported Azerbaijan, especially in the Karabakh issue. We will try to further develop cooperation between Pakistan and Azerbaijan."
Mohiuddin said Pakistan highly appreciates Azerbaijan's support of the Jammu and Kashmir issue.
The Jammu and Kashmir dispute is a complex and long-standing territorial conflict involving India, Pakistan, and, to a lesser extent, China. When British India was partitioned into India and Pakistan in August 1947, princely states were given the choice to join either country or remain independent. The princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, which was a Muslim-majority region with a Hindu Maharaja, Hari Singh, faced a dilemma.
The UN passed resolutions calling for a referendum to determine the region's future, but it was never implemented due to disagreements over the terms of the referendum.
Moreover, the ambassador noted Pakistan's readiness to support Azerbaijan in organising the 29th session of the high-level Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
The ambassador spoke about the work that will be done to promote cooperation between the two countries within the framework of Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's visit to Azerbaijan.
"The purpose of the visit will be to participate in COP29. We are interested in discussion and co-operation on environment and climate issues and are ready to provide Azerbaijan with all possible support within COP," Mohiuddin said.
