EU capitals consult on possible visit to Trump amid Ukraine plan debate
European capitals have intensified consultations regarding a potential visit to U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss his proposed plan for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
The topic has triggered significant political debate within the European Union and prompted sharp discussions among the bloc’s leaders.
According to Sky News, citing diplomatic sources, several prominent European politicians are considering travelling to Washington. Among the potential participants are French President Emmanuel Macron, German CDU leader Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The visit is intended to provide European capitals with direct explanations about the content of Trump’s peace plan and to assess its possible implications for continued support to Ukraine.
However, the initiative has not received unanimous support. The Guardian reports that U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer does not plan to join such a visit in the near future, underscoring divisions in approach within the Western alliance.
The situation was further complicated by statements from former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, who strongly criticised the idea of turning to Trump for guidance on Ukraine. He described the new American strategy as “the end of the end” and urged European leaders not to wait for a “sudden rescue” from Washington.
Landsbergis emphasised that Europe must assert its independence and avoid “humiliating itself” through visits that lack a coordinated strategy. “Our future and the fate of our continent are decided here, in Europe, not across the ocean,” he wrote in a post on an international social media platform.
The former minister also highlighted that the EU possesses sufficient resources to continue supporting Ukraine and should not present itself as “supplicants” before the United States.
There is a glaringly obvious message for Europe in the 28 point plan: This is the end of the end.

We have been told repeatedly and unambiguously that Ukraine’s security, and therefore Europe’s security, will be Europe’s responsibility. And now it is. Entirely.
