EU hails initialling of Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty as major breakthrough

The European Union has issued a statement expressing strong support and commendation following the initialling of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Treaty, signed by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the White House, in the presence of US President Donald Trump.

The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, described the agreements as a “significant breakthrough” aimed at ending decades of conflict between the two countries. The statement highlights the importance of both sides, along with the US Administration, for harnessing momentum to make progress possible, Caliber.Az reports.

The initialling of the treaty marks a decisive next step following the finalisation of the peace agreement text during bilateral negotiations last March. The treaty is based on mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and inviolability of borders, in line with the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration.

Once implemented, the EU expects the treaty to contribute positively to the peaceful development of the South Caucasus region and to bring societies, long divided by conflict, closer to sustainable peace and shared prosperity.

The EU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the normalisation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasising its ongoing work with both parties and international partners to create conditions for lasting peace. It also pledged to provide additional support and expertise for the practical implementation of the treaty’s next steps, including the signing and ratification phases.
