EU Parliament committee to vote on Russian energy ban proposal
The European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee is set to vote on a landmark proposal from the European Commission on October 16, aimed at ending the EU’s dependence on Russian gas and oil.
According to the committee’s official meeting agenda, the proposal outlines a complete phase-out of Russian fossil fuels by 2027. Under the plan, the signing of any new contracts for Russian gas supplies would be prohibited starting January 1, 2026, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Existing short-term contracts would be allowed to continue only until mid-June 2026, while long-term contracts would remain valid until January 1, 2027.
In addition, the Commission's proposal includes a full ban on imports of Russian oil and petroleum products, scheduled to take effect in 2026.
