EU's Borrell calls for immediate end to Gaza conflict Support for Palestinian statehood
During a press conference in Beirut, Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, urged for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip and emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Borrel underscored that achieving peace in the Middle East requires addressing the Palestinian issue, which includes the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
"Peace in the Middle East fundamentally depends on solving the Palestinian problem, and this means that Palestinians must achieve statehood," he stated.
The EU diplomat condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank, describing it as a "terrible tragedy" and denouncing the "brutal killings of civilians." He reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to working towards a ceasefire, although he acknowledged that the EU does not possess a "magic wand" to resolve the conflict immediately.
Borrel expressed optimism that a major war in the region is not unavoidable, relying on the willingness of all parties involved to seek a peaceful resolution. "We rely on the desire of the parties to avoid such a scenario and encourage everyone to move in that direction," he added.
