Mongolia’s PM submits resignation
Mongolia’s Prime Minister Gombojavyn Zandanshatar has submitted his resignation during a closed-door meeting of the governing council of the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP), according to the party’s Secretary General Yangug Sodbaatar.
The announcement was made following discussions within the ruling party on the country’s worsening socio-economic situation and issues related to the suspension of parliamentary activity.
“Today, at the meeting of the MPP council, the difficulties of the socio-economic situation in Mongolia due to the global situation and problems related to the suspension of parliament’s work were discussed. During the meeting, Prime Minister Gombojavyn Zandanshatar, on his own initiative, submitted his resignation,” Sodbaatar said, as cited by Ikon.
Under Mongolia’s legislation, the parliament must now formally consider and decide on the resignation. A standing parliamentary committee and a joint session are expected to convene later on the same day to review the request.
The move follows earlier political tensions. In October, members of the State Great Khural, Mongolia’s parliament, attempted to remove Zandanshatar from office less than six months after he assumed the post. At the time, the prime minister suggested that the political pressure stemmed from individuals opposed to his efforts to combat corruption in the coal mining sector, a key pillar of Mongolia’s economy.
