Borrell: EU may impose sanctions on Iran's aviation industry
EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has said that the EU firmly condemned the recent transfer of Iranian ballistic missiles to Russia and will impose new sanctions in response.
Borrell emphasised that the EU’s stance on Iran's involvement in Russia's war has always been clear, and now the EU will act swiftly and in coordination with international partners, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
“This includes implementing new and significant restrictive measures against Iran, targeting individuals and entities involved in Iran’s ballistic missile and drone programmes. The EU is also considering sanctions related to Iran’s aviation sector,” he added.
He described the transfer of Iranian missiles as a direct threat to European security, marking a significant escalation following the delivery of Iranian drones and munitions.
"This occurs amid Russia's recent attacks on Ukraine, including the use of ballistic missiles and drones, which demonstrate its clear determination to continue its war against Ukraine and its people. This campaign specifically targets critical energy infrastructure, aiming to cause maximum civilian casualties and inflict widespread destruction. Iranian ballistic missiles can be used to inflict further suffering and destruction in Ukraine," Borrell added.
Borrell informed EU member states about a proposal for imposing sanctions in response to Iran’s transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia. The UK has already announced its own sanctions packages against Iran and Russia. Additionally, the US Department of the Treasury has also imposed new sanctions on Iran.
