EU top diplomat highlights China’s potential role in ending Russia–Ukraine war
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the diplomatic process aimed at ending the war in Ukraine has stalled and argued that Russia should be brought back to the negotiating table through increased international pressure. She also suggested that China could play a meaningful role in influencing Moscow to move toward ending the conflict.
Kallas made the remarks in Brussels ahead of a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council focused on development issues, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
She said the current diplomatic process aimed at resolving the war has effectively stalled.
“Regarding Ukraine, we see that the peace negotiations have reached a deadlock,” Kallas said, adding that “nothing is currently happening in the negotiation process.”
Kallas argued that Russia is not currently in a strong position and that the international community should increase efforts to bring Moscow back to the negotiating table.
She also pointed to a potential role for China, noting Beijing’s close ties with Moscow and its ability to influence developments.
“China, which has close relations with Russia, plays a role here that could truly persuade them to stop this war,” she said.
