European Council head advocates for defence independence, reinforces US alliance
European Council President António Costa emphasized the need for the European Union to strengthen its own defence industry, while maintaining strong ties with the United States.
Costa acknowledged the current necessity of purchasing weapons from global suppliers, including Europe, the US, South Korea, and Japan, but stressed that the EU must shift focus to its own defence production in the long term, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
"In the short term, we will have to buy the weapons we need where they are. For example, in Europe, America, South Korea, or Japan. However, in the long term, our investments should go more into the defence industry of our countries," Costa said. He argued that such investments would enhance European security, create jobs, and drive innovation across the continent.
While advocating for greater European self-reliance in defence, Costa was clear that this should not come at the expense of the EU's relationship with the U.S.
"We must take more responsibility for our own defence, but that does not mean we want to cut our ties with the United States. We have to co-operate with the United States in a better and more balanced way. And that is what we are doing," Costa stated.
He reiterated that the United States remains a vital ally and friend of the European Union.
