FBI recovers suspected weapon that killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk
Investigators have recovered what they believe to be the rifle used in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah university campus, officials announced on September 11.
Robert Bohls, the FBI special agent in charge, said a high-powered bolt-action rifle was found in a wooded area where authorities believe the gunman fled after the September 10 attack, Caliber.Az reports via BBC.
Investigators also recovered a footwear impression and a forearm imprint at the site.
Bohls thanked the public for providing more than 130 tips so far, adding that the investigation has had “a few breakthroughs,” including the ability to track the shooter’s movements into a nearby neighbourhood. Authorities said they have obtained clear video and images of the suspect but are withholding them while the investigation continues.
The suspect, described by Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner as appearing to be of college age, “blended well into the campus environment.”
Kirk, 31, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, was shot and killed while speaking on campus. He co-founded Turning Point USA, a student organisation established in 2012 that aims to spread conservative ideals at liberal-leaning US colleges.
