Finland mulls deploying NATO troops on its territory
Lieutenant General Janne Jaakkola, commander of the Finnish Defence Forces, has said that his country is studying options for the deployment of troops of the North Atlantic Alliance and the actions of allied forces on the territory of the Republic.
"We don't have any decisions on this, but we are considering different options: whether it is extended training activities, a rotational model or other types of activities," Jaakkola said, Gazeta.ru reports citing Interfax.
According to him, the country's defence forces are strong enough, but the possibility of NATO troops on its territory in the future cannot be ruled out.
Jaakkola emphasised that now there is no immediate military threat to Finland, and its development depends on the situation in Ukraine.
Finland is the only country in the alliance that does not have troops from other NATO countries on a permanent basis.
