Finland set to launch large-scale military drills jointly with US, Europe
International military exercises involving special forces from the U.S. and various European countries are about to kick off in Finland and will continue until September 12.
Approximately 1,600 personnel are expected to participate in the drills, with manoeuvres taking place across the country on land, at sea, and in the air, Caliber.Az informs, citing foreign media.
The drills, dubbed Southern Griffin 25, will be hosted by the Finnish Army's Utti Jaeger Regiment.
The drills will see participation of representatives from multiple Finnish state bodies. The exercises aim to develop the joint operational capabilities of NATO special forces in Northern Europe.
The exercises will feature NH90 transport helicopters, MD500 light helicopters from the Utin Jäger Regiment, and Finnish Air Force F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets.
Southern Griffin 25 is part of a series of annual exercises by the Utti Jaeger Regiment, Finland’s elite light infantry unit specialising in reconnaissance, special operations, and rapid deployment. The participation of U.S. and European special forces reflects Finland’s focus on joint operations and improving coordination with NATO allies in Northern Europe.
The use of transport helicopters, light helicopters, and fighter jets allows troops to practice combined arms operations, rapid troop movement, and air-ground coordination under realistic conditions. Such exercises also serve as a signal of Finland’s readiness to defend its territory and support allied operations in the region.
