FM: Türkiye actively working to restore peace process between Iran, US

03 March 2026 13:49

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stressed the urgent need to stabilise the Middle East amid escalating tensions following ongoing US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

Speaking at a meeting with media representatives, Fidan warned that the ongoing conflict could threaten not only regional stability but also the broader international order, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

According to Fidan, while Iranian forces have not immediately responded with a sharp military reaction, the attacks have already prompted activity from the Hezbollah group, raising the risk of further escalation. He indicated that there are currently no signs within Iran that could lead to a regime change, but he cautioned that the situation could deteriorate and potentially engulf the entire region.

Fidan also highlighted potential global economic consequences. He warned that disruptions to gas supplies from Iran or broader energy imports from Persian Gulf countries could trigger a global energy crisis. Furthermore, he noted that any closure of the Strait of Hormuz would severely impact international trade, causing economic turmoil worldwide.

Türkiye, Fidan said, is actively working to restore the peace process. He outlined Ankara’s efforts to halt violence and return to diplomatic negotiations, emphasising the country’s focus on de-escalating tensions and preventing further deterioration of the situation.

On the international front, Fidan described Türkiye's engagement with European partners, including France and Germany, as well as regional countries such as Oman and Saudi Arabia, in seeking solutions to the crisis and mitigating its regional impact.

Addressing concerns for Turkish citizens in the region, Fidan stated that no nationals have been harmed so far and assured that consulates and embassies are working to facilitate their safe return. He reported that around 20,000 Turkish citizens, including those with dual nationality, currently reside in Iran and can cross into Türkiye freely through the country’s three border crossings. However, he noted that Iran is restricting the departure of its own citizens, ruling out the possibility of mass migration into Türkiye.
