Former Georgian Prime Minister faces up to 13 years behind bars
Former Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia is facing serious legal jeopardy, with two criminal cases recently filed against him.
The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that during his tenure as Minister of Internal Affairs, Gakharia exceeded his official powers. He is accused of wrongdoing in connection with police operations during a protest on the night of June 20–21, 2019, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
In addition, Gakharia faces charges over the establishment of a police post in August 2019 near the village of Chorchana in the Khashuri munisipality and the village Tsnelisi.
Gakharia, who currently leads a political party, has been residing in Germany since June 2025. Georgian media previously reported that he has secured residency in the country.
If convicted, the former prime minister could face a prison sentence of up to 13 years, highlighting the gravity of the allegations against one of Georgia’s most prominent political figures.
