Former German FM incorrectly calls Greenland EU member
Former German Foreign Minister and UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock told journalist Sandra Maischberger in an interview that Greenland is part of the European Union, according to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
“Greenland is also an EU territory,” Baerbock said, highlighting the island’s significance for the US and Europe. The journalist corrected her, noting that Greenland is not part of the EU.
Baerbock agreed but added that Greenlanders are EU citizens and “it also has an EU external border, which is why soldiers were sent there.”
The article clarifies that this statement was inaccurate. Greenland is an associated overseas territory of the EU, and the EU’s external border does not pass through it.
Moreover, German and other European troops were deployed to Greenland not to secure the EU border but officially to assess regional security at Denmark’s invitation.
