Former Hungarian PM emerges as contender for senior UN role
Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán could be considered for a senior position within the United Nations, according to a report by investigative journalism project VSquare.
Citing multiple diplomatic sources from both Hungary and abroad, the report claims that figures associated with the pro-Trump MAGA movement in the United States are discussing the possibility of securing a high-level UN post for Orbán. The main significance of such a role would be the level of legal protection and immunity it could provide rather than the position itself.
The report notes that different posts within the UN system carry varying degrees of immunity, ranging from limited functional protection to broad diplomatic immunity for the organization's highest-ranking officials.
According to VSquare, under the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, only the organization's top officials enjoy full diplomatic immunity comparable to that of foreign ambassadors, including protection from criminal prosecution for themselves and their family members. Lower-ranking officials generally receive immunity only in relation to their official duties.
The findings also suggest that potential supporters of such a scenario could include the current US administration as well as Argentina’s President Javier Milei, who has publicly backed Orbán.
Preparations for the selection of the next UN Secretary-General are already underway. According to the investigation, one of the leading names being discussed is Rafael Grossi, who currently heads the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
However, the scenario remains at an early stage of discussion and may never materialize, the report added.
