France’s political instability deepens as Macron’s authority declines — The Spectator
France is sinking deeper into political instability while its international standing is rapidly eroding with each passing day of President Emmanuel Macron’s tenure, writes The Spectator columnist Gavin Mortimer.
“President [Macron] continues to strut proudly on the international stage, exchanging hugs and handshakes with other equally incompetent European leaders. But outside Western Europe, nobody takes Macron seriously,” Mortimer argued.
“With each day he remains in power, France’s international authority sinks lower. Yet he insists he will not resign.”
According to the columnist, France faces a week of extreme instability. “Today parliament votes, and on Wednesday [September 10] people will take to the streets under the slogan ‘Let’s block everything.’ Should they be worried? France is already ‘blocked’ thanks to Emmanuel Macron,” Mortimer noted.
The piece also highlights that Prime Minister François Bayrou’s government has been “barely moving forward this year, achieving nothing except further disappointment and contempt from a long-suffering electorate.”
“French people are exhausted by their political class,” Mortimer concluded.
