French NATO exit advocate enters presidential race
French left-wing politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon has announced his candidacy in the upcoming presidential election in France, which will be held after the end of Emmanuel Macron’s term next year.
According to Politico, Mélenchon, 74, confirmed his participation, saying he considers himself the most suitable leader in what he described as “an agitated season in global history.”
A former member of the Socialist Party who later adopted a more radical political platform, Mélenchon has finished third in previous presidential elections, including in 2022 when he lost to Marine Le Pen.
Polls currently place his support at around 10–13 per cent. Analysts describe him as one of the most polarising candidates, with a loyal core electorate but limited broader appeal.
Among his key proposals are lowering the retirement age to 60, limiting inheritance, and withdrawing France from NATO.
