Georgia abolishes several state agencies as part of government restructuring
As of January 1, 2026, Georgia has officially dissolved a number of government agencies, signalling a major restructuring of state institutions.
The Resort Development Agency, established in 2022 to promote tourist destinations, prepare maps, and plan events, has been merged into the National Tourism Administration, Caliber.Az reports per Georgian media.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Business Ombudsman, which had operated since 2015 overseeing entrepreneurial activity and protecting business rights, has been abolished, with its responsibilities now transferred to an adviser to the Minister of Economy.
Further changes are expected on March 2, when the Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Personal Data Protection Service will be formally liquidated. Their duties will be fully absorbed by the State Audit Service.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau, created in September 2023, monitored party and official financing, grant programmes, and maintained a registry of “foreign agents.” The Personal Data Protection Service, established in March 2022, handled personal data processing, as well as confidential investigative actions, including electronic surveillance.
Officials have framed the restructuring as a step towards streamlining government functions, although critics have raised concerns about the consolidation of oversight powers.
