Georgia enforces ban on single-use plastic tableware
As of January 1, 2026, the production, import, and sale of certain single-use plastic tableware have been prohibited in Georgia.
According to Sputnik Georgia, the ban covers six types of items: knives, forks, spoons, plates, cocktail straws, and plastic sticks, Caliber.Az reports.
It applies not only to manufacturers and importers, but also to food service businesses delivering ready-to-eat meals in disposable containers and cups.
The Ministry of Agriculture has highlighted that excessive plastic consumption is a major environmental issue, and Georgia is no exception. A local study estimated that around 612.5 million single-use plastic cups, lids, food containers, utensils, straws, plates, and stirrers are consumed annually in the country, totalling between 3,900 and 5,900 tons of plastic.
Georgia’s fight against plastic began in 2019, when the country banned the production, import, and sale of single-use polythene bags of all densities, except for biodegradable alternatives.
