Georgia PM vows even closer cooperation with China amid opposition criticism
The Georgian authorities intend to take concrete steps to further deepen relations with China in both political and economic spheres, said the country’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
Leaders of opposition parties, including United National Movement and Lelo for Georgia, explained the absence of Georgian representatives at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit by claiming that “even for China, Georgia is an unreliable partner” and that the partners “don’t take the Georgian Dream seriously,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
“We have a strategic partnership with China, which we approach with great caution and attention. This is very valuable and important for us, and accordingly, concrete steps will be taken both politically and economically to further deepen cooperation between Georgia and China. I will personally do a great deal for this,” the prime minister told journalists.
According to the head of the Georgian government, some are speculating on this topic, portraying cooperation with China as “almost a national betrayal.”
“It is absolutely clear what values and principles guide our opposition,” Kobakhidze added.
