Georgia says new highway to Russia to open in 2028
Georgia’s new Kvesheti–Kobi highway, a major infrastructure project designed to provide an alternative route to the Georgian Military Road and improve connectivity with Russia, is scheduled to open in 2028.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Mzia Giorgobiani announced the timeline while speaking in parliament, according to TASS. “The full completion of the project is planned for 2028. The road will be put into operation during the same year,” she said.
The highway is being built in two sections. The first includes a nine-kilometre tunnel, fully excavated in 2024 and now undergoing finishing works. The second section consists of a 12.7-kilometre approach road to the tunnel. Construction is currently under way on four additional tunnels and five new bridges, while another bridge is set to be renovated.
Once completed, the new route is expected to enhance year-round transport safety and reliability across the mountainous region, where the existing Georgian Military Road is frequently disrupted by severe weather.
