Georgia stands firm on EU integration despite criticism of Brussels—president
Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili reiterated that Georgia remains committed to pursuing membership in the European Union, while stressing that accession to the bloc is not an end in itself.
“For us, the European Union is a means to strengthen our country. We express hope and affirm that we have both the opportunity and the goal to prepare ourselves, taking into account the values around which our entire nation has been united,” Kavelashvili stated, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
Concurrently, the president underscored persistent challenges in Georgia’s engagement with the EU, citing what he characterized as double standards, inequitable treatment of Georgia, violations of diplomatic norms, and meddling in domestic elections—factors that have collectively fueled public skepticism toward the union.
Nevertheless, Kavelashvili expressed optimism, noting that the situation could change over time, leaving room for improved relations and greater cooperation between Georgia and the European Union.
